What do I do?
When asked by people what I do, I simply say that I write databases. Their eyes usually glaze over at that point, so I never get to explain what that entails. What I do is facilitate line of business processes using a tried and trusted tool called Lotus Notes/Domino, which is owned by IBM. Lotus Notes is the client that you use to access databases on a Lotus Domino server, and it is :-
Cross-Platform - Lotus Notes / Domino can run on Windows, Mac, Linux, Mainframes and via a web browser.
Secure - in-built industrial strength security secures everything from the server right down to individual fields.
Distributed - replication technology means you can work on your database whether you're connected to the interent, office network or not.
Document-Oriented - reporting on the data is not restricted by strict hierarchical and relational regimes. If the data is in there, it can be sorted, diced and displayed.
Database Centric - a database can contain anything such as document libraries for expenses, workflow, documentation, etc etc
Messaging Framework - Email and calendaring are intrinsic parts of databases, so are not just restricted to your mail file.
Rapid Application Development - the Designer client helps the developer build applications quickly and easily.
Open Standards - It has been and remains at the forefront of using generic, open technologies such as TCP/IP, SMTP, HTTP, Java, JavaScript, SOAP, XML etc etc.
